Jarrod McClure WORCS Round 1 Race Report

(photo: ATV Riders - used with permission from Jarrod McClure)

Drive all the way to California?…are you crazy? That was the reaction I got from everyone at home last week, when I decided to make the 40+ hour drive across the country. I would leave my home in Pennsylvania on Saturday the weekend before the opening WORCS race and arrive at Mike Cafro’s house on Tuesday in Bonsall California. If you haven’t already heard, I am competing in both the WORCS and GNCC series once again for 2011. I will be riding a Honda TRX450R backed by Yokley Racing, the National Guard, Bowers Motorcycle, and Coastal Drilling. Coastal is a new sponsor that came on board this year, and is the main factor in my program that will allow me to run the WORCS series.

The opening round of WORCS always arrives way to fast for a lot of racers. I found myself struggling to finish my race ATV two days before my deadline to leave. I would leave the weekend before the WORCS race. I had to drive to Indianapolis where I met with the truck driver of the Coastal truck. The Coastal truck is an 80ft Renegade wrapped with all our sponsors and looks sick! Once there, I loaded my two quads in the trailer and tried to fit my truck but we needed eight more inches! I then realized that I would have to follow Frank (the truck driver) across the country in my pickup.

I arrived at Mike’s place late Tuesday and was happy to take a shower and unwind. I did some testing at Glen Helen on Wednesday, then came back to Mike’s to prep my quad. We headed up to the track late Friday night and upon arriving I realized I had to get out of my shorts and put some cold weather clothes on because it was about 20 degrees colder in Taft!

Saturday would be the day I got to practice and also my first time on the course. I went out for the unclassified race early and just got a feel for the track. The race course was a high-speed super fast track, which had a mixture of hard pack, loose terrain, square edge sand whoops, and a nice motocross track. I realized my setup was a little off, so back in the pits I made some changes. I adjusted my RPM axle to a wider setting, and I put some more air pressure in my tireballs to account for the high speed.

Pro practice was next which started at 1:30pm, this is also when we would qualify for our gate pick during the main on Sunday. I geared up and went out for the hour-long session. I found out after one lap that I had way to much air in my tireballs, because I was getting bounced everywhere. I qualified 10th, but knew I had to get back to work in the pits working on my tire pressures. I also had Mike Hallock from EXIT shocks make some slight changes to my rear shock. Other than those changes I was ready to go.

Race day finally arrived so I geared up in my sweet new Shift gear, and Bell Moto-9 helmet, and headed to the starting line. I realized I arrived late and missed my gate pick so I ended up way out on the end. Through the first turn I was near the back, but my Baldwin motor was pulling me forward each corner, by the fifth turn or so I was running mid-pack when a rider in front of me spun out leaving me nowhere to go but into his nerf bar! We both dismounted and quickly pried the ATV’s apart. From there I had to play catch-up from the back of the pack, I quickly got by Cafro and Baron who had issues early on. Next was Andy Lagzdins who also had some mechanical problems. There were three easy positions gained.

With lap one down, I had moved up three positions and began to close on Justin Waters and Tim Shelman. Midway through the lap I passed the pair and set my sights on Robbie Mitchell. My Roll Design suspension paired with EXIT shocks worked flawless all race and allowed me to keep moving forward, but before I knew it the race was winding down and the white flag was out…I was running out of time! I was able to pass John Shafe and move into the number 9 position to finish out the day.

I had a great race, the opening round is always crazy. I had little time testing the new machine, and also coming off my wrist injury I still don’t feel 100%. I plan on spending a few weeks out here on the West Coast to do some training and dial in my setup. Primm is the next WORCS race and I will definitely be more prepared!

I’d like to thank all of my sponsor’s for making this year possible:

Beau knows... how to win.

Beau Baron Battles Josh Creamer at Soboba Grand Prix Race
Beau Baron Takes Home $6,000 with Pro ATV & Open UTV Class Wins

San Jacinto, CA (1/18/2011)
– In preparation for the 2011 WORCS series, which kicks off January 21st, several racers decided to get in a little seat time at the Soboba Grand Prix and get their shot at the huge purse offered for the event. Although the competition was fierce, MCR/Maxxis Tire’s Beau Baron smoked the competition in both the Pro ATV class and the Side-By-Side class, aboard a bone stock Polaris RZR 4-seater, no less.

The Soboba Grand Prix has grown in popularity over the last couple of years. This year the event offered up a huge overall purse of $20,000 with $5,000 dedicated to the Pro ATV class and another $10,000 going just to the UTV class.

There were thirteen quads lined up for the Pro ATV class, including H-Bomb Racing’s Josh Creamer, Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson and Josh Row, who is new to the Yamaha team for the 2011 WORCS series.

As racers charged off the line for the two hour long Pro ATV race, it was Josh Creamer who would grab the holeshot, but his lead would not last as Beau Baron went for the pass after only ¾ of a lap and got around Creamer in a downhill section. “Once I got out front I started pulling away and put about an 18 second lead on everyone, but then I sucked in some water at this creek crossing and my bike started to bog and choke really bad. Creamer started catching up to me but I got lucky and my motor cleared out and I started pulling away again,” Baron explained.

From there, Baron ran a flawless race and went on to take the checkered flag. “It was a pretty tough race. I thought that since Creamer is a motocrosser that he would get tired and fall back, but he didn’t, so I had to really keep on it to stay ahead. I think he is definitely going to be a tough competitor at WORCS this year,” said Baron.

Josh Creamer joined Baron on the podium in a solid second place with Dustin Nelson close behind him in third, while Josh Row claimed an impressive fourth.Although there were only thirteen racers for the Pro ATV class, the $10K purse for the UTV class drew in over 40 participants that included full blown race teams with incredibly tricked out machines. Admittedly, Beau Baron was feeling a little out classed at first as he took to the starting line in a bone stock Polaris RZR 4-seater. “There were all these really modified side-by-sides there, all of them two-seaters, and to top it off I had to start on the third row, so I didn’t think I even had a chance,” said Baron.

Despite a less than ideal starting position, Baron quickly charged ahead. “I had all these guys bumping and pushing me going up the hills, but then on the downhills and the turns, I would pull ahead. Honestly, I don’t know how I pulled off the win. I guess I just have a knack for driving these!” Baron exclaimed.

With this race under their belts, Beau Baron, Josh Creamer, Dustin Nelson and Josh Row should be ready to tackle the first round of the 2011 WORCS series that will be held in Taft, CA at Honolulu Hills on January 21st – 23rd where the competition will be intense.

Roll Design / Elka combo wins Dakar!!

Proving, once again, to be one of the best packages you can get for your quad - the Roll Design / Elka rider Alejandro Patronelli has won the toughest off-road race on the planet.

Alejandro Patronelli: "I had not won anything since 2000"
Tough. Real tough. If we analyze what happened, it's incredible. We had lost our momentum, Marcos had fallen. We should not be here actually. Getting back in the race, losing hope again, finding it back, losing it yet again when I broke my hand and I was unable to accelerate. There were still some 400 km left in that stage and still 7 or 8 to go, with a damaged hand. This is when I thought: "if my hand can stand the 400 km, the rest will be able to hold on for the remaining 5,000 km". And here I am, Champion with one-and-a-half hand! What a reward. I had not won anything since 2000 and I am now Dakar's Number One! I just cannot believe it.

Congratulations to the Patronelli team on their amazing victory!

WORCS video Stoke - 2010 footage

Lets go racing!!

Thought I would share the WORCS Rd 1 video from last year to get everyone stoked for next weekend. Beau Baron comments in the video "... it gets tougher every year... like the first year I started, everybody had a decent pace, then last year everybody was FLYING..."

So true Beau... and the same comment could apply to next years video because 2011's racing will be epic.

Can't wait.

Hancock Racing wins Parker 250 Expert quad!

The Hancock Racing team of Matt Hancock and Josh Edwards raced this last weekend in the Parker 250 Quad expert class (#404). Both Matt and Josh had a great race with Josh started the race in 7th and working his way up to 3rd at by the alternate pit. Matt got on the bike at the alt pit and made his way into first place about race mile 60. They held on to the lead for the rest of the race to take the win!

The Roll Design / Elka combo proved once again to be a winning formula.

Keep an eye on Matt and Josh throughout the 2011 season at WORCS events and more.

Nice job guys! See you in 10 days.

Keep it twisted!!

Roll Design / Elka rider Alejandro Patronelli wins stage 2 Quad

Alejandro Patronelli: “I’m going to continue to do the best I can” (quad) (dossard 252)

“I just wanted to ride the stage. I was not aiming for victory at all today. It was a clean stage, quite nice and not dangerous. There were a lot of bikes and plenty of dust. I was able to overtake a few bikers, but after that it got more difficult. It’s good to have won, but being 2nd in the general standings doesn’t mean much. For instance, if I get a puncture tomorrow, I could end up way back in the field. So, I’m going to continue racing my way, taking it day by day and trying to do the best I can”.

Keep up the good work Alejandro!

Dakar Rally 2011 is here!

Everything is here - Dakar Rally home page
Make sure to follow the rally all week with LIVE TIMING or download the iphone app HERE.

Last years ATV winner, Roll Design / Elka equipped Marcos Patronelli was seriously hurt with broken Tibia(?) last month during testing. He has entered and is lining up, but will likely take it easy through the duration. Just to complete the event would be quite amazing! He is surely helping to motivate his Brother, last years 2nd place, to put in his best effort.

Good luck guys, we'll keep tabs throughout the week.
